A Brief History

Seward was founded in 1903 as a gateway for the Alaska Railroad, making it one of the oldest communities in the state. It was named after William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. The town played a significant role in early Alaskan commerce and remains an important fishing and tourism hub today.
